Administrative Deputy Minister of Sports Hung Chih-chang gave a briefing Jan. 21 in Taipei City on participation in the upcoming 2026 Olympic Winter Games set to take place in Milan and Cortina, Italy, Feb. 6-22.

The Winter Olympics includes 116 categories of sport, with a record 10 Team Taiwan athletes set to compete over nine competitions in seven categories. These are alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, speed skating, bobsleigh, two-person and skeleton bobsleigh. This is the first time that Taiwanese female athletes have qualified to participate in the women’s individual bobsleigh event, Hung said.

The Winter Olympics delegation comprises 10 athletes, eight coaches and 19 other staff including physical therapists and equipment specialists. The ministry supports national athletes with equipment and subsidized training at home, including at the national Taiwan Sports Training Center in Kaohsiung, which also offers other resources according to athletes’ needs, the MOS added.

Despite Taiwan’s limited environment for winter sports, this year a record number of Taiwanese athletes have gained entry to the Winter Olympics. The government is committed to support athletes to compete in international competitions. (POC-E)
